Schluchtensteig trail with dog – sportly version

Experienced hikers will enjoy the more challenging Schluchtensteig variant. Instead of six stages, the 119 km of the Schluchtensteig are completed in just five stages. Stage lengths increase to 20–25 km, combined with up to 750 meters of elevation gain, making for a demanding—but not impossible—challenge. It’s worth starting your hiking days early on this tour to enjoy a rest at one of the many beautiful spots in the heart of nature.

Reiseverlauf

Tag 1: Arrival - Stühlingen

You will travel to Stühlingen today, either by train, bus, or your own vehicle.

In Stühlingen, there are public parking areas where you can leave your car free of charge for the duration of your hiking trip. The nearest train station is Lauchringen, from which buses run to Stühlingen.

1. – 2. Tag: Stühlingen

It is primarily known as the starting point for the hike along the Schluchtensteig trail. Additionally, the Southern Black Forest Cycle Path also passes through Stühlingen.

Tag 2: Stühlingen - Wutachmühle

From Stühlingen to Wutachmühle Distance: approx. 30 km | 730 m ascent | 600 m descent

From the Upper Rhine, the route climbs up to the Baar plateau. The ascents are not to be underestimated but are rewarded with impressive panoramic views. With a bit of luck, the historic Sauschwänzle railway will cross your path during the first part of the stage. Later, the trail leads along narrow, root-covered paths through the primeval forest-like Wutachflühen to the Wutachmühle.

2. – 3. Tag: Wutach

Where there is water, and thus water power, in the Black Forest, there is often a mill. The Wutachmühle is a small hamlet with the mentioned mill, a motorhome parking area, and a kiosk.

Tag 3: Wutachmühle - Lenzkirch

From Wutachmühle to Lenzkirch Distance: approx. 27 km | 620 m ascent | 380 m descent

Today, you’ll delve deep into the world of the Black Forest gorges. Between steep, rugged cliffs, the wild Wutach carves its way through one of the oldest nature reserves in Baden-Württemberg. The trail follows the rushing river, with waterfalls splashing and lush greenery all around you. Passing the Räuberschlössle and the wooden Stallegg Bridge, the stage leads you all the way to Lenzkirch.

3. – 4. Tag: Lenzkirch

Lenzkirch is known for its historical clockmakers and watch sellers. Over time, international companies, traditional artisans, and modern service providers have all contributed to shaping the town located at the upper end of the Wutach Gorge.

Tag 4: Lenzkirch - St. Blasien

From Lenzkirch to St. Blasien Distance: approx. 25 km | 700 m ascent | 740 m descent

After a challenging climb up to Fischbach, one of the most beautiful viewpoints of the tour awaits you: the view from the Bildstein down to Lake Schluchsee, reaching as far as the Alpine peaks on clear days. A stop at the Unterkrummenhof offers a perfect opportunity to admire the shimmering waters of the vast Schluchsee. The trail then continues along varied forest paths to St. Blasien.

4. – 5. Tag: Sankt Blasien

Sankt Blasien is famous for its cathedral. Additionally, it is located right along the Schluchtensteig and Albsteig hiking trails.

Tag 5: St. Blasien - Todtmoos

From St. Blasien to Todtmoos Distance: approx. 19 km | 540 m ascent | 500 m descent

Today, instead of looking into deep gorges, you’ll enjoy sweeping views from numerous vantage points. From the observation tower on the Lehenkopf, your gaze stretches far across the Black Forest. At the Horbacher Heide, you can see as far as the Swiss Jura on clear days, with a panoramic display identifying the visible Alpine peaks. At the end of the stage, the trail once again lives up to its name: it descends into the Hohwehraschlucht gorge and leads you to the charming “Lebküchler” village of Todtmoos.

5. – 6. Tag: Todtmoos

Todtmoos is known for its large pilgrimage church and the regular pilgrimages that take place from all directions.

Tag 6: Todtmoos - Wehr

From Todtmoos to Wehr Distance: approx. 23 km | 410 m ascent | 870 m descent

The final stage takes you along beautiful forest trails to your destination in Wehr. Along the way, you’ll frequently traverse narrow paths with steep slopes. A short additional climb to the Mettlerhütte is well worth it. The small hut is not staffed, but there is a fountain in front where you can refill your water and enjoy the stunning view. After passing the Wehr Reservoir, the trail continues gently to the final destination, Wehr.

6. – 7. Tag: Wehr

Wehr is a small town situated along the Wehra River, between the Dinkelberg to the west and the High Black Forest to the east. It is characterized by its industrial activities.
