Westweg trail – South

The Westweg adventure continues! If you’ve already explored the northern section, this trip will complete your north-to-south Black Forest crossing. But even without “previous experience,” this tour is well worth it. Compared to the first half, the seven southern Westweg stages from Hausach to the final destination in Weil am Rhein are somewhat less demanding, thanks to fewer long ascents and descents. Once you’ve mastered the climb up to the Feldberg—the highest peak in the Black Forest—you’ll stay at an elevation of at least 1,000 meters above sea level until just before Kandern. The reward: pure panoramic views. From Stübenwasen to Belchen and, of course, the Blauen—the southern classics are waiting for you!

Reiseverlauf

Tag 1: Getting there - Hausach

You will travel to Hausach today, either by train, bus, or your own vehicle.

1. – 2. Tag: Hausach

Hausach in the Kinzigtal valley is fortunate when it comes to climate and weather. Despite being in the midst of the Black Forest, Hausach is known for its mild, fog-free climate in spring and autumn. Located centrally in the Kinzigtal, the town is an important educational center and a significant hub for industry and commerce.

Tag 2: Hausach - Schonach

From Hausach to Schonach Distance: approx. 21 km | 1,110 m ascent | 370 m descent

Some call this the “Devil’s Stage” of the Westweg: today, nearly 1,300 m of elevation gain await you. However, after the first steep climb up to Farrenkopf, you’ll have already conquered half of the day’s ascent. Two more climbs later, you can relax at Karlstein and let your gaze wander over seemingly endless spruce forests. From here, the trail continues lightly, with gentle ups and downs, toward Wilhelmshöhe.

2. – 3. Tag: Schonach im Schwarzwald

In Schonach, hiking trails invite you to explore the landscape and nature reserves on foot, with a mountain bike, or an e-bike. Popular destinations include the legendary Blindensee and the Rohrhardsberg nature reserve. Numerous cross-country skiing trails and ski slopes are also available. Additionally, thanks to the world's largest cuckoo clock, Schonach has made it into the Guinness Book of World Records.

Tag 3: Schonach - Kalte Herberge

From Schonach to Kalte Herberge. Distance: approx. 22 km | 440 m ascent | 390 m descent | short cut option*.

Right at the beginning, you'll encounter the Hochmoor-Blindensee, an especially idyllic spot. It's so beautiful here that you might feel like whispering. Next, you'll reach the Martinskapelle, where you can find the source of the Danube nearby. While it may not look particularly spectacular, it's still impressive when you consider how this small stream eventually becomes a mighty river.

*short cut option: bus ride from Neukirch (-5 km)

3. – 4. Tag: Vöhrenbach

The Kalte Herberge is a stage destination on the long-distance hiking trail Westweg. This traditional mountain inn is located between the vacation regions of Furtwangen, Triberg, and Titisee in an idyllic setting. In the summer, nature enthusiasts and active vacationers can enjoy the area, and in the winter, ski lifts and cross-country ski tracks delight skiers' hearts.

Tag 4: Kalte Herberge - Hinterzarten

From Kalte Herberge to Hinterzarten. Distance: approx. 27 km | 520 m ascent | 650 m descent | short cut option*.

The Feldberg is calling. Although the highest peak of the Black Forest is not on your itinerary today, it will gradually come into view as you progress, building your anticipation. The highlight of this stage is undoubtedly Lake Titisee, the largest and most famous natural lake in the Black Forest. It's worth taking in the local atmosphere while enjoying a slice of Black Forest cake.

*short cut option: bus ride from Breitnau (- 9 km) | train ride from Titisee (-6 km)

4. – 5. Tag: Hinterzarten

Originally a pure farming village, Hinterzarten is now heavily influenced by tourism. The town is characterized by numerous hotels, tourist leisure facilities, and a diverse gastronomy scene. It is also home to the Black Forest Ski Museum. In general, the town is associated with winter sports, and the ski jump hills on the outskirts of the town are a prominent feature of its landscape, visible from afar.

Tag 5: Hinterzarten - Notschrei

From Hinterzarten to Notschrei Distance: approx. 21 km | 720 m ascent | 490 m descent

The “king stage,” including the ascent of the Feldberg, awaits you. Needless to say, the panoramic views from the summit are absolutely stunning. But the journey continues to be rewarding. At Stübenwasen, a beautiful mountain pass just below the Feldberg, the pace slows down. Here, you can relax on Germany’s largest log bench, enjoy the view in peace, and soak up the sun.

5. – 6. Tag: Todtnau

With its vast forests, clear mountain lakes, and numerous hiking and cross-country skiing trails, this place offers an ideal environment for outdoor activities in every season. The Notschrei is also an excellent starting point for outdoor adventures such as skiing and mountain biking, allowing visitors to experience the untouched beauty of the Black Forest in all its glory.

The endpoint of the Westweg trail is located directly at the mountain pass. Accommodation can be found in either Todtnauberg or Muggenbrunn. Information about the altered hiking route can be found in the travel documents.

Tag 6: Notschrei - Haldenhof

From Notschrei to Haldenhof Distance: approx. 19 km | 530 m ascent | 730 m descent

After reaching the highest point yesterday, today you’ll climb perhaps the most beautiful peak in the Black Forest: the Belchen at 1,414 m. An alpine path winds beautifully up the steep northern slope from Wiedener Eck. Once on the bare summit, you’ll enjoy an indescribable panoramic view over the entire Southern Black Forest all the way to the Alps. But watch out—you don’t want to be carried away by the wind!

6. – 7. Tag: Kleines Wiesental

The Haldenhof is also the endpoint of the stage. From here, travelers can continue to Badenweiler, the Kleine Wiesental, or Staufen. Notable attractions in the municipality include the Nonnenmattweiher, the Belchen, the Sternenschanze, the Schwedenschanze, and the Dekan-Strohmeyer-Kapelle.

Tag 7: Haldenhof - Kandern

From Haldenhof to Kandern Distance: approx. 20 km | 440 m ascent | 1,010 m descent

The end of the Westweg is slowly coming into view. Today, you’ll climb Blauen, the last of the ten 1,000-meter peaks. After one final steep ascent, enjoy a last panoramic view stretching toward your final destination, Weil am Rhein. Descending along small forest paths, past Hexenplatz and Sausenburg, you leave the Black Forest behind and enter the historic town of Kandern. The atmosphere here feels almost a little Mediterranean.

7. – 8. Tag: Kandern

Kandern's tradition as a pottery town is evident in the local Heimat- und Keramikmuseum (local history and ceramics museum), in the ceramic workshops, and during a visit to the ceramic market held in September. The Blumenplatz (Flower Square) in the town center is one of the most beautiful classical market squares in southern Germany.

Der Blumenplatz in Kandern

Tag 8: Kandern - Weil am Rhein

From Kandern to Weil am Rhein Distance: approx. 21 km | 490 m ascent | 560 m descent

On the final stage, you leave the Black Forest behind for good. Green meadows, gentle vineyards, and light deciduous forests of the Markgräflerland contrast with the deep forests of the past days. Weil am Rhein marks the end of your Westweg hike. From here, the Swiss city of Basel is just a short distance away and definitely worth a visit.

8. – 9. Tag: Weil am Rhein

The cityscape is characterized by 21 Maxi-Chairs, whose prototypes are housed in the internationally renowned Vitra Design Museum. The museum, along with its attached architecture park, attracts over 70,000 visitors annually. The Dreiländerbrücke (Three-Country Bridge) is also well-known worldwide.

Information about the trip

Best Travel Time
This trip can be booked from April to October.

Dogs
You’re welcome to bring your four-legged friend. To do so, please book the corresponding trip under our Dog-Friendly Tours.

Special Features of the Trail
The Westweg is a high-altitude trail. The daily stages are long and in parts strenuous and demanding due to the elevation gain. At a few points, the trail has an alpine character: narrow, steep paths, with roots and rocks underfoot. Surefootedness is required, but there are no climbing sections. On some stages, there are only a few—or no—places to stop for food or drink. Therefore, carrying enough provisions for the whole day is essential! This trip is not suitable for people with reduced mobility.

Parking
You can leave your car in a nearby parking garage in Hausach for the duration of your hiking trip (fees apply).

Return to the Starting Point
From Weil am Rhein you can take public transport back to your starting point in Hausach. The journey takes between 2 and 3 hours depending on the connection and usually involves one or more changes. Please note: Weil am Rhein is not part of the KONUS system, meaning you will need to purchase a ticket for the return trip.

KONUS
With the KONUS guest card, you can use public transport in the Black Forest free of charge.

Bewertungen
