Westweg trail with dog – Short trip East

Not as well-known as its “big sister” in the west, the eastern variant of the Westweg offers a quieter experience. From Titisee—where the trail splits—the route leads further into the heart of the Black Forest before reaching its final destination in Basel. Much calmer than the main route, this path takes you across peaks that are still considered insider tips. One of them is the Herzogenhorn—at 1,415 m the second-highest summit in the entire Black Forest!—from which the Swiss Alpine range seems almost within reach. With daily stages of around 20 km, usually without too much elevation gain, the hike is very manageable. A rewarding alternative—or addition!

  • Hike off the main route on peaceful trails
  • Marvel at stunning panoramic views from the two highest peaks of the Black Forest

Reiseverlauf

1. – 2. Tag: Hinterzarten

Originally a pure farming village, Hinterzarten is now heavily influenced by tourism. The town is characterized by numerous hotels, tourist leisure facilities, and a diverse gastronomy scene. It is also home to the Black Forest Ski Museum. In general, the town is associated with winter sports, and the ski jump hills on the outskirts of the town are a prominent feature of its landscape, visible from afar.

Tag 2: Titisee - Feldberg

2. – 3. Tag: Feldberg (Schwarzwald)

Tag 3: Feldberg - Todtmoos

From Feldberg to Todtmoos Distance: approx. 21 km | 730 m ascent | 920 m descent

Today, four peaks over 1,200 m are on your hiking program. Grafenmatt, Blößling, Hochkopf, and Herzogenhorn are still considered hidden gems. The Herzogenhorn, at 1,415 m, is the second-highest peak in the Black Forest! The trail takes you along secluded paths, offering variety and frequent beautiful views, mostly through forests. Keep your eyes open—if you’re lucky, you might spot chamois native to the Hochkopf.

3. – 4. Tag: Todtmoos

Todtmoos is known for its large pilgrimage church and the regular pilgrimages that take place from all directions.

Tag 4: Todtmoos - Hasel

From Todtmoos to Hasel Distance: approx. 21 km | 310 m ascent | 930 m descent

The Black Forest shows its versatility today, with open mixed forests and beautiful orchard meadows. From a distance, you’ll already spot the distinctive tower of Hohe Möhr. The 144 steps up to the 25 m-high platform are well worth the effort. At over 1,000 m above sea level, you’ll enjoy a magnificent view toward the Dinkelberg and the Swiss Alps. After the stage, a bus takes you from Hasel to Wehr.

4. – 5. Tag: Hasel

Die Erdmannshöhle von Hasel

Tag 5: Hasel - Rheinfelden-Eichsel

From Hasel to Rheinfelden-Obereichsel Distance: approx. 17 km | 320 m ascent | 300 m descent

The Dinkelberg is the highlight of today’s stage. Geologically, it no longer belongs to the Black Forest and is considered a separate mountain massif. Fields and orchard meadows replace the Black Forest spruces here. Not only from the Hohe Flum, but also along the way, you should take the time to look back at the route you’ve conquered over the past few days.

5. – 6. Tag: Rheinfelden (Baden)

Tag 6: Rheinfelden-Eichsel - Basel

From Obereichsel to Weil am Rhein Distance: approx. 22 km | 460 m ascent | 630 m descent

One final climb through the romantic Ruschbachtal and you’re almost there. Just before Basel, another highlight awaits: narrow, rocky paths along the steep slopes of the Rhine Valley lead you through Germany’s unique boxwood forest. Of course, a stroll through the Swiss cultural and art hub of Basel is a must. After an eventful day, take the train to your final destination in Weil am Rhein.

6. – 7. Tag: Weil am Rhein

The cityscape is characterized by 21 Maxi-Chairs, whose prototypes are housed in the internationally renowned Vitra Design Museum. The museum, along with its attached architecture park, attracts over 70,000 visitors annually. The Dreiländerbrücke (Three-Country Bridge) is also well-known worldwide.

Dogs
You’re welcome to bring your four-legged friend. Accommodation is provided in dog-friendly hotels, where dogs are allowed in designated dog rooms. Please note that dogs are not permitted in restaurants or certain other common areas.

Special Features of the Trail
The Westweg is a high-altitude trail. The daily stages are long and in parts strenuous and demanding due to the elevation gain. At a few points, the trail has an alpine character: narrow, steep paths, with roots and rocks underfoot. Surefootedness is required, but there are no climbing sections. On some stages, there are only a few—or no—places to stop for food or drink. Therefore, carrying enough provisions for the whole day is essential! This trip is not suitable for people with reduced mobility.

Parking
You can leave your car in a nearby parking in Hinterzarten for the duration of your hiking trip (fees apply).

Return to the Starting Point
From Weil am Rhein you can take public transport back to your starting point in Titisee or Hinterzarten. The journey takes between 1,5 and 2 hours depending on the connection and usually involves only one change. Please note: Weil am Rhein is not part of the KONUS system, meaning you will need to purchase a ticket for the return trip.

KONUS
With the KONUS guest card, you can use public transport in the Black Forest free of charge.
